Natural Hydraulic Lime (more commonly called NHL) has been produced in Saint Astier, France since 30 BC, and produced on an industrial scale since 1851. NHL is enjoying a modern comeback due to its performance and beauty, as well as it’s naturally green building aspects.
Saint Astier® Natural Hydraulic Lime, or NHL, is a 100% natural product and does not contain any additives. It is one of the greenest materials used in construction. This is due to its purity, its calcium carbonate composition, its longevity and potential for allowing the materials to be reused or recycled and the result of a low energy production process. Saint Astier® products are perfect for anyone with allergies or sensitivities to chemicals.
By using Natural Hydraulic Lime you can – as artisans have in the past – recreate the same exact finishes that adorn many of the world’s most iconic and enduring ancient landmarks. Saint Astier® products are an especially ideal choice for restoration projects where you want to be sure that any new mortars or plasters will not react with the original materials that are already in place.
The plaster finishes in the Saint Astier® lineup have a wide variety of names and textures ranging from “lime plaster” to “Venetian plaster”, “Marmorino” and “Tadelakt”. Rustic finishes are often achieved by using products from their offering such as NHL 2 or EcoMortar F, while finer or smoother finishes are more easily achieved with Decofond or Decoliss.
